PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (UPI): Haitian Justice Minister Henri Dorlean has called for the immediate release of hundreds of prisoners or fair trials for those being held without charges.
Dorlean, who assumed the role of Haiti's justice minister in June, said that continuing to hold suspects without any legal proceedings such as a trial is a blatant violation of their human rights, Haitian radio reported Wednesday.
Among those being held for extended periods is Haiti's former Prime Minister Yvon Neptune, who was arrested last year after former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide left the country.
Neptune has been accused of ordering the deaths of political opponents to Aristide, an allegation he denies.
Aristide left Haiti in February 2004 as armed rebels were taking over the country calling for his resignation. <- Last Page | Next Page -> |
