Dumarsais Simeus Will Challenge the Constitution in Haiti's Supreme Court

Haitians In the News , 8/18/2005, 1:57 AM

Article 135 of the Haitian constitution states that a presidential candidate must be a native born Haitian and never have renounce Haitian nationality  and have resided in the country for five consecutive years before the election.

Being that Haiti has had so many different constitutions I am not sure which one says it.

Finally someone has decided to challenge the Haitian constitution in Haiti's Supreme Court.

Here are a few clips from an article by the Christian science monitor

... Dumarsais Simeus said in  phone interview  "I don't have anything to overcome in terms of the Constitution or getting on the ballot. I never renounced my citizenship....My residence has been listed here ever since I was born. I have been fortunate to have other homes and other citizenships, but I never gave up my Haitian ones."

... Siméus will challenge the current interpretation of the constitution in Haiti's Supreme Court and set a precedent for other Haitian-Americans with political ambitions...

... the country [Haiti] is filled with "political wannabes" who see Siméus as a threat and would "do everything they can to derail his candidacy."

... Running a country like Haiti, which is broke and in bankruptcy takes many of the same skills as a successful businessman: leadership, knowing how to pick the right people to work for you, knowing how to create jobs for people."

... He vows to create a "country that can function properly and an environment for investment.... I want to be realistic about how long this turn around will take. It will take at least a generation, but within the first year change will start taking off. We will start the rebuilding process."

Best of luck Mr. Simeux

Mr Simeux looks like a man of charactor unlike Aristid, The Docs and those who where in between bunch of "N" who seen money.
Haiti needs a great manager like him who knows how to select employees to run his business (Haiti)
If he become elected, I will send him my resume my main dream is to part of the recreational team in Haiti. I graduated from FIT where I studied from head to toe because I wanted to teach the unfortunates in Haiti. I remember when I was a child in Haiti, one of my best friend was a rest-avec. They made him work like a slave and because of him, I studied so hard to be able to help him or his children in the future.
Please Mr Simeux hit them with your best shot and I'll be right behind you.
It is time for a change.

I don't think he should be allowed to run

It's from the 1987 constitution.

Violating the constitution is not a good way to start off a "new Haiti" no matter how appealing the candidate seems to be.

If Mr Simeus wants to lead Haiti, and I hope he does, he should come live in Haiti for 5 years and absorb the place he left so long ago. It will make the constitution still legitimate and hopefully teach him something.

Haiti Already has so many ignorant I don’t know why to have more
If this Man really want to help Haiti, he don’t have to run for president, this man don’t even know the Haitian constitution the article of 135 say that we have to pass five consecutive years before the election. Take example here did you believe that Bush or any president make this country rich, or the people make him like that
